How to Tan Faster This Summer (Without Frying Your Skin)

You can't rush your skin — but you can stop wasting the sun you get. The honest routine for a faster-looking, longer-lasting glow.

Every summer, the same search spikes: how to tan faster. And every summer, the same cycle follows — day-one scorch, day-three peel, day-seven back to square one. So let's do this properly. This is the honest version: what actually controls how quickly you tan, what a tanning accelerator can (and can't) do, and why the fastest glow is the one you don't burn off.

First, the honest bit

A tan is your skin responding to UV exposure. There is no cream, pill or hack that makes UV itself harmless — anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something you shouldn't buy. What you can control is how well your skin is prepped, how sensibly you dose your sessions, and how well you hold onto the colour afterwards. 'Faster' should mean efficient, not reckless. A burn is not a head start: it's skin damage that peels, and peeling takes your would-be tan with it.

1. Prep the canvas before you chase the sun

Tan sits in the outermost layer of your skin, so the condition of that layer decides everything. Dry, flaky skin sheds unevenly and takes colour off in patches — that's why rushed tans go streaky even when they're real. The week before a holiday or your first proper sun day, get boring about two things: exfoliating and moisturising.

  • Exfoliate 24 hours before sun exposure with a mitt or gentle scrub — not the morning of, so skin isn't sensitised.
  • Moisturise morning and night in the run-up. Hydrated skin looks smoother, reflects light more evenly and holds colour for longer.
  • Shave or wax at least a day ahead, never right before sun, to avoid irritation on freshly exposed skin.

2. Short, smart sessions beat one long bake

The biggest 'tan faster' myth is that more hours equals more tan. In reality, skin has a limit to how much pigment it can produce in a day — past that point you're just accumulating damage. Several shorter sessions across consecutive days build colour far better than one marathon roast, and they're dramatically easier on your skin. Check the UV index on your weather app: when it's high, keep sessions short and favour morning or late-afternoon sun. Midday Mediterranean sun is not a challenge to beat; it's how you end up watching the rest of the holiday from a shaded balcony.

3. Feed your skin, not just your tan

This is where a tanning accelerator earns its place in the bag. The Capri Glow Accelerator is a rich, fast-absorbing cream built around coconut oil, shea butter and tyrosine, applied before sun or sunbed exposure. It contains no fake tan, no bronzer and no DHA — it adds zero colour of its own. What it does is drench skin in the kind of deep hydration that makes your own glow show up looking deeper and more even, and keeps skin conditioned enough to hold onto it. Think of it as the difference between painting on sandpaper and painting on a primed canvas.

Smooth a generous layer over clean, dry skin before you head out, let it sink in for a minute, then layer your SPF on top. Reapply after swimming or towelling off. That last part matters more than most people realise — see the next section.

4. SPF is not the enemy of your tan

Here's the maths nobody wants to do: a burn typically peels within a week, which resets your colour entirely. Skipping SPF for a 'faster' tan usually means a paler August, not a browner one. The girls with the deepest, longest-lasting holiday glow are almost always the ones reapplying sunscreen like it's their job.

5. Aftercare is where tans are actually kept

Sun, salt, chlorine and air-con all strip moisture, and dehydrated skin sheds faster — taking your tan with it. Post-sun, take a lukewarm (not hot) shower, pat rather than rub, and get a rich moisturiser or after-sun on within ten minutes. Keep drinking water; a tan held by hydrated skin simply lasts longer. Leftover Glow Accelerator doubles beautifully as an after-sun hydrator, so the tin keeps working after sunset.

Your seven-day glow timeline

  1. 1Days 1–5 before: exfoliate twice, moisturise twice a day, hydrate like it's a sport.
  2. 2Day before: final gentle exfoliation, heavy moisturiser overnight.
  3. 3Sun days: accelerator on clean skin, SPF on top, short sessions, shade breaks.
  4. 4Evenings: cool shower, after-sun or accelerator as a body cream, early night — skin repairs while you sleep.
  5. 5All week: reapply SPF every two hours in the sun, and after every swim.

The fastest tan isn't the one that shows up first. It's the one still with you in September.

Capri glow rule: no tan is worth a burn. The Glow Accelerator contains no sun protection — SPF goes on top, every time, and gets reapplied like clockwork.
