Does SPF Stop You Tanning? The Honest Answer
The most persistent myth in the glow game, answered properly: no, SPF doesn't stop you tanning — and yes, your tan will last longer because of it.

Somewhere along the line, a rumour took hold that sunscreen is the enemy of a good tan — that every layer of SPF is a layer of glow you're not getting. It's the reason people 'forget' their sunscreen on day one of holiday, and it's the reason day three is spent peeled and pink in the shade. So let's settle it properly: does SPF stop you tanning? No. But what it does do is more interesting — and it's why the best tans you'll ever have are the ones built with it.
The short answer
No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV. SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of UVB — the burning rays — and SPF 50 around 98%. That remaining sliver still reaches your skin, and your skin still responds with colour. You tan a little more slowly per session, and you keep the result dramatically longer. SPF doesn't switch tanning off; it turns the dial from 'scorch' to 'simmer'.
What SPF actually does (and what the number means)
The SPF number is mainly about UVB, the rays that burn. Broad-spectrum on the label means it also covers UVA, the deeper-penetrating rays behind tanning and skin ageing. No filter is a wall — even SPF 100 lets about 1% of UVB through, and UVA filtering is never total either. That's why colour still builds through sunscreen. And it's also why the honest framing matters: no tan is risk-free. A tan is your skin responding to UV exposure. SPF reduces the damage; it doesn't erase it. Anyone promising a 'safe tan' is selling fiction.
Why SPF tans are the ones that last
Here's the maths the myth never mentions. Unprotected sun often means a burn — and burned skin peels, usually within a week, taking your entire colour with it. You don't get a faster tan; you get a redder weekend and a paler August. Tanning with SPF builds colour gradually across multiple sessions, never triggers the peel, and the tan you build is the tan you keep. The deepest, longest-lasting holiday glows almost always belong to the people reapplying sunscreen like it's their job.
The myths, corrected
- 'SPF 50 means no tan.' You still tan — slightly slower per session, far longer-lasting overall.
- 'A base tan protects you.' A developed tan gives protection equivalent to roughly SPF 3–4. That's nothing. It is not a substitute for sunscreen.
- 'Fake tan counts as protection.' Zero UV defence. A fake tan in the sun without SPF is just unprotected skin in a nicer shade.
- 'You can't burn in the shade or through glass.' Shade cuts UV, it doesn't remove it — reflected UV off sand, water and loungers still reaches you. Sit by the pool in shade for hours and you can still catch colour, and still burn.
- 'Once I've tanned I can drop the SPF.' A fading tan is not protection. The SPF routine stays until the sun goes down on the last day.
The routine that gets you glow AND keeps your skin
The order matters more than the products. On clean, dry skin, apply your Glow Accelerator first — coconut oil, shea and tyrosine, deeply hydrating, so the colour you build looks even and holds. Give it a minute, then apply SPF 30+ generously over the top: around 35ml for a full body, which is more than most people ever use. Reapply SPF every two hours and straight after swimming, redoing the accelerator after towel-drying too. Keep sessions sensible — check the UV index and favour morning or late-afternoon sun when it's high — and moisturise every evening. That loop, repeated across a week, is how you come home deeper than the friend who skipped SPF and peeled by Thursday.
SPF doesn't cost you a tan. It costs you a burn — and buys you a tan that's still with you in September.
Capri glow rule: no tan is worth a burn. The Glow Accelerator contains no sun protection — SPF goes on top, every time, and gets reapplied like clockwork.
