How to Apply Tanning Accelerator (So It Actually Looks Even)
The difference between a gorgeous even glow and a patchy one is five minutes of technique. Here's the full method.

A tanning accelerator is the lowest-effort product in your beach bag — no mitt, no developing time, no colour to guide you. But 'low effort' doesn't mean 'no technique'. The girls with the seamless, did-you-see-her glow are doing the same five things every time, and none of them are complicated. This is the full method, from the night before to the last reapplication.
First, what you're actually holding
An accelerator is skincare, not colour. The Capri Glow Accelerator is a rich, fast-absorbing cream built around coconut oil, shea butter and tyrosine — an amino acid used in accelerator formulas — with zero DHA, zero bronzer and zero tint. Because there's no colour, there's no guide coat to show you where you've been, which is exactly why the evenness rules below matter. Apply it before sun or sunbed exposure; it adds no colour by itself, it conditions skin so your own glow develops looking deeper and more even.
Step 1: win the evenness battle the night before
Every patchy tan story starts with dry, flaky skin. Accelerator or not, colour sits in the outer layer of your skin, and if that layer is rough it sheds unevenly — taking your glow off in leopard print. Exfoliate with a mitt or gentle scrub about 24 hours before your first sun session, moisturise well afterwards, and shave or wax at least a day ahead so skin isn't sensitised on the day.
Step 2: apply to clean, dry skin
Not over yesterday's body lotion, not straight out of a hot shower when skin is still damp. Clean, dry, product-free skin is the canvas. Scoop a generous amount — this is not a 'pea-sized dot' situation — and warm it between your palms first. Warm cream spreads thinner and more evenly than cold cream straight from the tin, which is half the evenness battle won before you've started.
Step 3: work in zones, not all at once
The biggest application mistake is trying to do your whole body from one scoop, stretching the last dregs across your shins. Instead, apply zone by zone with a fresh scoop for each, using long strokes to cover and then small circles to work it in:
- 1Each lower leg (knee down) — one scoop per leg.
- 2Each thigh — one scoop per leg.
- 3Stomach and chest — one scoop.
- 4Each arm, shoulder to wrist — one scoop per arm.
- 5Back — as much as you can reach, or phone a friend. Untanned back patches are a known holiday tragedy.
Step 4: the evenness rules for tricky spots
Knees, elbows, ankles and knuckles are drier than everywhere else, so they grab product and develop differently. Don't skip them — that's how you get pale patches — but use what's already on the area rather than adding extra, and work it in thoroughly. For hands, apply as normal, then wipe your palms and between your fingers on a towel afterwards: palms don't tan anyway, and greasy palm prints on your phone, your drink and your white linen shorts are nobody's holiday aesthetic. Don't forget ears, the back of your neck and the tops of your feet — the three most-missed zones in the game.
Step 5: SPF goes on top. Always.
Step 6: reapply like you mean it
Swimming, towelling and sweating all strip both your SPF and your accelerator. After every swim, towel off and redo both layers — accelerator first, SPF on top. It takes ninety seconds and it's the difference between a glow that compounds across the week and one that plateaus on day two. In the evening, whatever's left in the tin doubles as a genuinely lovely after-sun body cream, so end the day with another layer on clean skin.
The mistakes that ruin an even glow
- Applying over old moisturiser or yesterday's SPF — residue blocks even absorption.
- Using one scoop for the entire body, so the last zones get a watered-down smear.
- Skipping exfoliation and wondering why day four looks patchy.
- Forgetting the back of the neck, ears and foot-tops until they burn first.
- Treating it like SPF and skipping actual sun protection. It's a cream, not a shield.
Even glow isn't luck. It's warm cream, fresh scoops, and ninety seconds of reapplication nobody saw you do.
Capri glow rule: no tan is worth a burn. The Glow Accelerator contains no sun protection — SPF goes on top, every time, and gets reapplied like clockwork.
